Based on their analysis of years of IP traffic throughout the world, Cisco researchers are now predicting 4.8 zettabytes of IP traffic will be hitting the internet by 2020 — per year. That means we’ve essentially speeded past terabytes (10 terabytes is roughly equal to the digitized works of the Library of Congress), and the petabyte (2 petabytes would contain the work of all US research libraries) and the exabyte (5 of which would contain every word spoken by humans).
